The “Dies Irae”, a Gregorian Chant melody vividly describing the Last Judgment, is one of the central codes in the language of classical music, from which so many composers have drawn inspiration over the centuries. This piano recital features two very different examples of works created in the shadow of this code: Bach’s Partita in D major, a monumental dance-suite; and Rachmaninoff’s 1st Sonata in D minor. Based on on the tragic Faust-Legend, this Sonata uses the Dies Irae to construct an epic musical drama of exceptional power and scope.
